site-specific performance-installation in the underground cloakrooms of the Assembly Rooms in Stoke Newington,

London (june 2002)

[cloakroom deposits] rotozaza

by Ant Hampton and Britt Hatzius

two cloakroom spaces, adjacent to each other, turned into a world of wondering, waiting, and working mechanisms in the dark.

WAY IN: ...the attendant asks audience one by one for a "something", an object, a small thing that anyone might find in the bottom of a pocket. Still dark, his torch flickers, a description of the given object is recorded on dictaphone.

A model railway running through and amongst the hooks; a dialogue of voices; a telling of a story; an endless waiting for the interval, for the admittance to the auditorium, and heaps of seemingly senseless raffletickets.

next: an admittance into the mirrored space, dim light, looking carefully, listening to recorded voices listing descriptions of objects,... recognizing your own.
