fallen

installation, 16mm double projection

(looped)

2012

In an endless loop objects keep falling in reverse (the title 'fallen' in German is 'the act of falling') but have always already fallen (in English it refers to the past tense of falling, i.e. perished, deceased). The repetitive movements resemble those of a rehearsal, or a scientific study. But there is nothing perfected in the objects descents, which are mostly clumsy and unspectacular. In the slightly slowed down movements, the objects, with their differing physical characteristics, attain a human quality, one at times both humorous and melancholic. The second film is a role of found footage of Japanese Olympic divers in a training pool. The piece is accompanied by a sound recording of a female voice trying to describe the numerous words that exist in Japanese language for 'acts of falling'.
